Japan on verge of RWC 2011 Qualification

Japan coach John Kirwan described himself as "pretty happy" with his side's performance after they ran out 101-7 winners over Kazakhstan to move to within touching distance of a place at Rugby World Cup 2011.

Kirwan's side have now enjoyed 11 bonus point victories in the three year history of the HSBC Asian 5 Nations, the most recent coming thanks to a 15-try haul at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo on Saturday.

They now sit six points clear of Hong Kong at the top of the standings with the two rivals to meet at the same Tokyo venue next Saturday. Japan have a far superior point differential and are favourites to claim a third successive Asian 5 Nations crown.

This will see the Brave Blossoms qualify for Rugby World Cup 2011 as Asia 1 and join hosts New Zealand, France, Tonga and Canada in Pool A at the showpiece tournament.

Kazakhstan's heavy loss has not ended their hopes of finishing second in the Top 5, a placing which would see them enter the cross-continental play-off to determine the 20th and final qualifier for Rugby World Cup 2011.

They currently lie fourth in the Top 5 standings, five points adrift of Hong Kong, but a bonus point win over Korea next weekend will see Kazakhstan secure that coveted second spot, providing Hong Kong leave Tokyo without a four-try or losing bonus point.

Japan had wrapped up the try-scoring bonus point by the 17th minute against Kazakhstan, Shota Horie, Sione Vatuvei, Goshi Tachikawa and Koji Taira touching down for the hosts.

Lithuania ready to set a World record - Rugby World Cup

As unlikely as it may sound, the rugby minnows of Lithuania are still in with a chance of reaching next year's Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, and owe their position to a remarkable sequence of matches.

The Lithuanians head into their European Nations match against Switzerland this weekend with a chance to create rugby history in becoming the first country to win 18 consecutive tests.

If they do record a likely victory against Switzerland, a team 21 places below them in the IRB World Rankings and whom they beat 33-0 in their last encounter, the men from Vilnius will achieve something not even the All Blacks or Springboks have managed.

Rugby World Cup Qualifing Is Shifted To Asia

The qualifying focus for Rugby World Cup 2011 now switches to Asia with Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Hong Kong and the Arabian Gulf set to kick-start their final push when the HSBC Asian 5 Nations Top 5 begins on 24 April.

Japan go into the elite tier of the Asian 5 Nations competition looking for a third successive title, an outcome which will see them qualify for RWC 2011 as Asia 1 to join hosts New Zealand, France, Tonga and Canada in Pool A.

The runner up will enter the cross-continental play-off, where Uruguay initially awaits them in July. Whoever emerges from this will face either Tunisia or Romania home and away to determine the 20th and final qualifier for New Zealand 2011.

The only Asian side to grace the Rugby World Cup stage, Japan will be favourites to claim a third successive Asian 5 Nations title, but the battle for second place is likely to a close-run affair between 2009 runners up Kazakhstan, Korea and Hong Kong.

Keep Johnson for Rugby World Cup

Former England winger Rory Underwood says that England manager Martin Johnson is the right man to lead England to the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

England have come under fire after winning just two of their Six Nations matches and slipping from second to third place in 2010 which has led questions being asked about Johnson and his coaching staff’s credentials.

However the former England winger Underwood told BBC Sport: “I would stick with him until the World Cup.

“Hopefully we’ll get things sorted out over the next 18 months and move in the right direction.”

Johnson was criticised for a lack of flair in attack during the Six Nations and they went from being the top try scoring team in 2009 to scoring just six tries in five matches in the 2010 tournament.

However even though England lost they did show lots of attacking flair in their 12-10 defeat by Grand Slam champions France in Paris.

Ironically England looked convincing in the early stages and scored a try that would not have looked out of place in tournaments such as the Super14 but when the rain came down England started to struggle.
